Arthritis Knee Pain: Understanding the Causes

Arthritis is a disease which causes pain and damage to the body’s joints. Any joint can be affected, and all will cause different quality of life issues. The knee is made up of three bones. It is located where the bottom of the femur and the top of the tibia meet. It is protected in the front by a bone known as the patella, or kneecap. There are a number of tendons and ligaments which hold the bones in the proper alignment and allow the bones to hinge properly. There is also cartilage which is located on the bones and under the kneecap that cushions the joint and prevents damage to the leg bones. There are other ways to treat knee pain but it is important to know what kind of arthritis you have since the way they affect the joints is very different. Osteoarthritis affects the bones and cartilage because of overuse or injury. Rheumatoid arthritis is a result of the body’s immune system attacking the joints. It damages and inflames the meniscus. Osteoarthritis tends to be an ongoing process whereas rheumatoid arthritis can have periods where the disease flares up and gets worse, and other periods where it is in remission and symptoms improve.

Medication can be your first line of attack but these are different depending on your disease. All types of arthritis rely on anti-inflammatory medications and pain relievers to treat discomfort. With rheumatoid arthritis, you may also have DMARDs, which are disease modifying antirheumatic drugs. Two DMARDs include methotrexate and azathioprine, although there are a number of other effective DMARDs currently available. Osteoarthritis may use glucosamine and chondroitin supplementation in order to help improve the condition of cartilage in the knee joint.

There are several surgical options to treat knee pain. They include scoping the knee to repair or remove damaged cartilage, repairing a torn meniscus, or a total knee replacement. Total knee replacements may take quite some time to recover from but artificial knee joints can help you return to a high quality of life.

Other non medical means of treatment can include heat wraps and arthritis creams. These can soothe sore joints and provide some relief. Remember that you should never heat a joint that has been affected by rheumatoid arthritis. You want to calm the heat that is in the joint, not add to it. You also want to make sure you are continuing to use the joint since letting it become immobile will not help and you will end up with more severe problems down the road. Knee Joint Pain: Coping and Understanding

A knee brace is for supporting the joint and managing the pain. The brace will hold the knee in place and keep it from turning and will add warmth to the joint for comfort. This also enhances a healing of the joint.

The condition of your feet will affect the pressure on your knee joint. Using arch supports in your shoes will help to balance your legs and take stress off your knee joints. If your shoes are wearing unevenly it is a clear sign that either your feet turn in when you walk or there is a pronation problem. Pronation is when the bones of the foot rotate so that the weight is mainly carried on the inside of the foot which throws the whole body out of alignment.

Excess weight will put a huge amount of stress on sore joints. The knees carry most of the body’s weight so losing just a little of the excess weight takes away a lot of stress.

Strengthening the muscles of the thighs will help to support the joints of the knees.
