How to Deal with Pain in Your Lower Back

March 22nd, 2009 by Kim Archer
by George Blade

Four out of five of people experience back pain, often lower back pain, at some point in their life. Since it could happen to you, you should be aware of what causes it and how to prevent it in order to eliminate back pain.

As you get older, your body starts to lose muscle tone and elasticity, and also bone strength. The discs in your spine undergo fluid loss and become less flexible, and they can no longer protect the vertebrae as efficiently. Getting older is one of the reasons you experience lower back pain.

If the ligaments or muscles in your back are subjected to a strain, spasm, sprain, the spinal discs can bulge or rupture. That puts a considerable amount of pressure on the nerves that are located in your spinal cord. If those nerve roots experience irritation or compression, your back lets you know there’s a problem by sending pain signals. So what’s the cause of a back sprain, spasm, or strain? Generally it’s some type of injury or trauma, for instance trying to lift an overly heavy object, or stretching beyond your limits.

Lower back pain can also be caused by diseases like osteoporosis and arthritis. There are also causes including viral infections, joint or disc irritation and spinal abnormalities.

Lifestyle factors can also be contributors to lower back pain. This includes smoking, being overweight, pregnancy, stress, bad posture and being in poor shape. Hip pain and lower back pain sometimes come as a distressing package deal. Scar tissue from previous injuries can also be a cause of lower back pain – this scar tissue buildup can even cause other, more serious injuries.

You should take your lower back pain seriously if it comes along with other symptoms. These might include a fever, a painful cough, loss of bladder or bowel control and muscular weakness, especially in the legs. If your lower back pain is accompanied by these symptoms, contact your physician immediately. They may indicate a pinched nerve or other underlying problem. If you are diabetic, lower back pain may indicate neuropathy.

By utilizing proper back pain management techniques, you can avoid problems in the future. Recurring lower back pain can usually be traced to poor posture. You can work on correcting this. Stand straight, remember to lift with your legs rather than with your back, and do exercises to build lower back strength. Make sure to follow proper ergonomic procedures during your workday. This can go a long way towards preventing lower back pain.

Natural Pain Relief: The Right Way Of Doing It

March 20th, 2009 by Sibusiso M. Maseko
by Lucille Green

There probably isn’t a person on this planet that hasn’t suffered pain at some point and the reason we have this distasteful experience is as a defense against continuing a particular action; like a person who picks up something heavy and hurts their back, so the pain stops them from picking up anything else. Anything can trigger pain from a headache to a broken bone but the pain gives us an indication of where and what the problem is. Sometimes, however, pain isn’t dealt with so easily and it remains with us despite all efforts to banish it.

People who suffer with back injuries, arthritis or migraines for instance are said to be suffering with ‘chronic pain’; which doesn’t go away. Around the world, many people live with chronic pain throughout their lives and it can happen at anytime for almost any reason. It is also true to say that many people that suffer with chronic pain no longer have the condition which caused the problem as it has long since been cured but the pain persists, blighting their lives and gradually getting worse.

The most popular treatment for chronic pain are prescription medications, but these often have adverse side effects ranging from nausea to fatigue, and can cease to be effective once a patient builds a tolerance; many people are now looking towards natural pain relief methods. One such natural pain relief method is the use of acupuncture, a treatment that has origins many thousands of years old. The Chinese use acupuncture to treat and cure many ailments by inserting long very thin needles into the skin.

Patients claim acupuncture has proven effective in treating ailments such as neck pain, migraine headaches, arthritic pain, and even depression. Other alternative therapies are used to provide natural pain relief like herbal remedies which can also make claim to being side effect free. For the reduction in arthritic pain, Emu oil can be used and people with scarring pain can try vitamin E; these are just two natural pain relief remedies of the many available.

The only problem to using herbal remedies as treatments is they do not provide instant results but rather a gradual build up; however, they are not going to cause problems to the system as only natural products are taken.

So despite all this advice, it is possible to lower the risk of needing natural pain relief during your life if you maintain a healthy diet and avoid those foods which we know to be detrimental to long term health like processed foods and foods that have a high fat or salt content. People often underestimate the need for proper sleep and disregard any advice on regular exercise like walking and refraining from using the elevator to use the stairs, both of which are good for the heart.

Cream Pain Reliever: Do These Really Work?

March 19th, 2009 by Melinda Beartoes
by Melinda Beartoes

When you suffer from just about any kind of pain, your casual activities are disrupted because you can’t perform these with any type of comfort and your focus is most of the time is on the pain that you are suffering from. If someone is hurting from arthritis pain, tendonitis pain, a headache, back pain or any type of pain, they will want to find relief as fast as they possibly can so that they can once again get back to their regular activities. Many times, it is not until you have a pain of some sort that you realize how fortunate you are everyday just to be pain free and able to do easy activities, as some pains can completely curtail you from moving.

Do Pain Relief Creams Work?

Yes and no, depending on the kind of pain you have, but in the largest part, pain relief creams will provide effective and quick relief. There are all kinds of pain relief creams that will work on the unique pain that you are suffering from, and the most common pains are the: back and joint pain, headache, muscle ache and of course arthritis pain.

Pain relief creams work on initial stages mostly when your pain is not chronic. The best part about cream pain relievers are that they target the region of the pain when compared to drugs that have to be distributed into your whole system, but the cream pain reliever must be rubbed into the skin completely to be totally effective and work the quickest.

Different Types Of Pain Relief Creams

Some of the most sought after pain relief creams are the natural types, which are strong enough to provide you relief and does not have any side effects. Most pain relief creams don’t incorporate antibiotics and thus can be purchased over the counter without a prescription but if you are presently having a serious health problem it is wise to run it by your doctor for approval.

There are no side effects from pain relief creams but you may encounter skin rashes, especially if you have sensitive type skin; the rashes should disappear normally without any further medication required but if they remain, contact your doctor immediately. Try not to apply more pain relief cream then shown on the tube of the cream as some are strong enough to produce a superficial burn of the upper layer of the skin where applied; using more cream will not get rid of the pain quicker but can create more damage.

Helpful Tip

There are some pain relief creams that can have a very strong odor and can leave stains on your clothes and bed linens, so try to avoid this by getting a non-oily pain relief cream, so you can have your pain relieved and you don’t have a mess you have to clean up.

Live Pain-Free by Activating Your Mental Pharmacy

March 7th, 2009 by Sandra Marlowe
by Sandra Marlowe

Those who suffer from chronic pain are often forced to make a choice: live with their persistent, sometimes even debilitating pain, or take medication to gain limited relief. Medications are a costly solution that can have mixed results and uncomfortable side effects. Most people turn to these medications without considering other options, but what if there were a safe, natural solution? There is, and even better, its a solution that every person holds within his or her own mind. With the right direction, the mind can be trained to release healing chemicals that are just as effective as pharmaceuticals, with none of the costs or toxic side effects.

Creative visualization and relaxation (CVR) provides a new solution. Acclaimed therapist Patrick K. Porter, PhD, has developed a new CVR program titled Pain-Free Lifestyle. His techniques are designed to help eliminate chronic pain in a natural way, quickly and easily. The program helps those who suffer from chronic pain realize that the most powerful remedy they have lies within their own mind.

The second CVR process of his thirteen-session Pain-Free Lifestyle program is titled Activate Your Mental Pharmacy, and guides the listener to relax and use his or her own mind as a healing tool. Listeners learn to naturally relieve chronic pain and discomfort from their bodies using the power of their mind as an alternative to expensive and sometimes toxic pharmaceuticals. (Of course, CVR should be integrated into a total pain management plan, and medication should not be discontinued without discussion and approval of a medical doctor.)

CVR is designed to relax the body and open the mind to change. When in a state of deep relaxation during Activate Your Mental Pharmacy, the listener creates a trigger that signals the brain to release healing chemicals designed to take away pain in the body quickly and naturally. The process also helps the listener learn to stop being afraid of the pain and truly embrace a pain-free lifestyle.

At this point, you may be wondering what these natural healing chemicals are. CVR results in a significant increase of two very important brain chemicals: serotonin and endorphins. An increase in either of these two chemicals brings about a sense of calm and improves the overall feeling of well-being in the body. A twenty-minute CVR session increases endorphin levels by twenty-five percent and serotonin levels by twenty-one percent. Together, the result is relief from pain, improved health, and natural anti-depressant effects.

A great benefit of activating these natural chemicals is that they provide both physical and mental well-being. In addition to relief from physical pain, these chemicals calm the body, increase brain alertness, encourage a positive mindset by acting as natural anti-depressants, and increase feelings of pleasure and love. As a result, CVR not only addresses the physical relief from pain, but also helps one cope with the mental and emotional effects that pain can have on one’s sense of self.

The key element to this process is relaxation. The listener is lead through a series of relaxation and breathing techniques by Dr. Porter. They become more relaxed throughout the process, and then find it easier to relax and focus when awake. Most are unaware of any discomfort while listening to the process, and this helps them absorb the information provided in the exercise.

More effective results can be achieved by practicing the CVR techniques often. The benefits begin the first time one listens to a session and practices relaxation. The more the process is repeated, the easier and more effectively listeners can activate their healing brain chemicals. Chronic pain sufferers can even direct these natural chemicals to the specific areas of the body where they experience pain. With practice, they can apply relief to the exact source of their pain.

Those who suffer chronic pain notice differences in their life immediately after using CVR techniques. Dr. Porter’s program creates a positive cycle, making each day better than the one before, until listeners are truly living pain free. In addition to the benefits of activating what Dr. Porter calls the mental pharmacy, listeners find themselves craving healthy foods and eating better, being more active and doing exercises that are safe and even therapeutic for their body, and releasing anger and fear so that they can truly be free of their chronic pain. Those who use CVR consistently as part of their pain management program find that life improves every day as they make peace with their bodies and use their minds as a solution.

Dr. Porter encourages his listeners to relax, and get used to the feeling. By activating their mental pharmacy, chronic pain sufferers are taking an important step in living a totally pain-free life. The process ends with a mental vacation, a place where the listener can enjoy the present moment, free from pain, and just relax.

Dr. Porter has been working with the creative visualization and relaxation process for over twenty years, helping people to change their minds in order to change their lives. His pain-free program is designed to supplement the care and recommendations of a medical doctor. He stresses that listeners should never discontinue prescription use without first consulting their medical doctor.

The Natural Healing Power of Everlasting

March 4th, 2009 by Jenny Hobbs
by Helen England

There’s a little known secret in natural therapeutics — the profound healing pain relief of Everlasting essential oil. Its action is nothing short of amazing, though this information is rarely offered directly by aromatherapy companies due to advertising restrictions. Throughout the medical aromatherapy texts however, this fantastic oil is lauded for its broad range of healing effects on the body’s tissues. Here’s a quick primer on using this oil for yourself and your loved ones.

The pure essential oil steam distilled from the flowers of the Helicrhysum italicum plant is an absolutely remarkable healing agent. Not just compared to natural medicines, but compared to ALL pain relieving medicines available today. It is safe, effective, and easy-to-use. The oil is listed in ‘Essential Oil Safety’ as non-toxic, non-irritating and non-sensitizing. It is regularly prescribed for undiluted application to the skin (where very few other essential oils are). Most conservatively, the oil is sometimes said to be avoided during pregnancy, and by young children — but this warning is not found in today’s most advanced aromatherapy texts. If your situation is questionable, check with a health professional before use, but know that Everlasting essential oil is considered to be exceptionally safe.

In terms of efficacy, a great many trained natural therapists have found the oil to be the most profoundly pain relieving of any topical medicine available today. Back ache? Joint pain? Sports injury? Pain due to surgery or other trauma? All these ailments and more can be treated effectively with a preparation of Everlasting essential oil in the vegetable or nut oil of your choice. Users call it a ‘magic oil’, and claim the pain relief is ‘amazing’. Apricot Kernel oil is commonly used, as it has anti-inflammation properties itself; Rosehip seed and Tamanu oils are used when treating skin damage; Jojoba is a wonderful all-purpose stand-by, good for any application.

Making our own formulation is very easy to do. It is recommended to start of with lower dilutions and work your way up only if necessary; this helps you conserve the precious oil by only using as much as required for the desired results. Forty drops of Helicrysum in each ounce of carrier oil will create an approximate 5 percent dilution; eighty drops for a 10 percent dilution; etc. The pure essential oil, not diluted in any carrier oil, is recommended when a trauma has just occurred, to prevent further tissue damage due to swelling and oxidative free-radicals. For example, a twisted ankle could receive a few drops of the pure oil from a fingertip, massaged into the painful region immediately after the injury, and several times over the next 24 hours.

In addition to its pain-relieving action, the pure essential oil includes natural constituents which actually speed wound healing. It is thought that this is a result of the oil quenching free radicals in the injured area, and signaling tissues to regenerate. For these reasons, Everlasting is also found in many formulas for healing and anti-aging of the skin. Everlasting is also excellent for burns, and just a little bit of oil on small burns can provide immediate relief. (If using for injuries with broken skin, avoid use if excessive bleeding is an issue, as the oil acts as an anticoagulant. Use only once bleeding has stopped completely, and is not likely to be of concern again in these cases).

The finest of Everlasting essential oil varieties is considered to be that distilled from plants grown on the island of Corsica, France. The environmental conditions and sub-species genetics result in a unique natural chemical composition of the essential oil with strong anti-inflammate, analgesic and regenerative properties. This oil may be listed as Helichrysum italicum sub-species ’serotinum’. You may find that other varieties work as well for your needs, and can experiment as you see fit.

Everlasting essential oil is one of nature’s most profound healers. It works for a great many symptoms of pain, safely and effectively. It is simple to use and readily available through internet sources (it is, as of yet, difficult to find in local health food stores, though this may be changing soon). Whatever your needs for this type of therapy, Everlasting essential oil is worth investigating.
